Aligning Manitoba’s Economic Growth with a Net-Zero Future

Oct 20, 2025

With the release of Manitoba’s Path to Net Zero, the province has taken an important step toward defining how we will grow a stronger, cleaner economy. While the strategy provides a high-level framework, detailed action plans are still to follow. The strategy recognizes that achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 is not only an environmental goal but an economic imperative, one that requires evidence-based planning and collaboration across all sectors.

Manitoba’s Economic Development Strategy and new Roadmap to Net Zero present a critical opportunity to align energy security with economic growth. Major initiatives such as the Port of Churchill redevelopment and the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure will require reliable, low-carbon power to sustain both construction and long-term operations. With hydro capacity alone unable to meet future demand, Manitoba must plan now to diversify its clean-energy mix and invest in clean technologies that ensure affordability and reliability.

Through the Manitoba Green Advantage (MGA), the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (MCC) continues to champion this alignment. Our Time Is Now: Manitoba’s Roadmap for a Green Economy complements the provincial strategy through four key actions:

  • Strengthening incentives and programs for energy efficiency and renewable power
  • Transitioning the Whiteshell Laboratories site into a low-carbon energy hub
  • Establishing a Federal–Manitoba Green Economy Steering Committee to coordinate policy and investment
  • Maximizing funding and partnerships to expand wind, critical minerals, and modular SMR initiatives

Manitoba’s prosperity depends on connecting innovation with clean growth. The MCC is committed to working with government, Indigenous Nations, and industry to secure a sustainable, affordable, and competitive energy future for all Manitobans.
