Advancing the Manitoba Advantage in Ottawa

Apr 17, 2026

The Manitoba Advantage was front and centre in Ottawa this week, bringing forward a clear and unified message: Manitoba is ready to deliver for Canada.

A delegation of business and community leaders, including Business Council of Manitoba, CentrePort Canada, Manitoba Heavy Construction Association, Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, and The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, met with senior federal decision-makers to advance priorities critical to Canada’s economic strength, security, and resilience.

These were substantive, solutions-focused discussions grounded in Manitoba’s strategic advantages and its ability to contribute to national objectives at a time of increasing global and economic uncertainty.

Trade and Infrastructure: Strengthening National Connectivity

A key focus throughout the week was Manitoba’s role in advancing Canada’s trade diversification and supply chain resilience.
With its central location and integrated, multimodal transportation network, Manitoba is uniquely positioned to strengthen east–west and north–south trade flows. From CentrePort Canada to northern and Arctic gateways, the province offers a connected platform to expand export capacity, improve trade fluidity, and reduce reliance on single corridors.

The message was clear: strategic investment in trade-enabling infrastructure in Manitoba is an investment in Canada’s national competitiveness.

Defence, Arctic Sovereignty, and Industrial Capacity

Discussions also highlighted Manitoba’s role in supporting Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy and broader sovereignty objectives.

With a strong aerospace cluster, a growing advanced manufacturing base, and a strategically important biosciences sector, Manitoba offers a unique combination of industrial capability. This is reinforced by direct access to the Arctic through the Port of Churchill and a nationally central geography that supports deployment, logistics, and supply chain integration.
Together, these assets position the province to support sovereign production, strengthen northern access, and contribute to long-term national security and resilience.

Talent and Workforce: Enabling Growth

Across all sectors, access to a skilled and reliable workforce remains foundational.

Delegates emphasized the importance of a responsive and regionally informed immigration system to support Manitoba’s labour market needs. With workforce constraints already limiting growth, ensuring access to talent is essential to advancing major infrastructure projects, scaling industrial capacity, and delivering on national priorities.

A Collaborative Effort with National Impact

Hill Days like this underscore the importance of a coordinated and sustained presence in Ottawa. Building relationships, strengthening partnerships, and engaging directly with decision-makers ensures Manitoba’s priorities are understood and aligned with federal objectives.

The delegation also welcomed government and industry leaders at a Manitoba reception, creating further opportunities to strengthen connections and advance dialogue.

Manitoba’s business community is aligned, engaged, and ready to partner with the federal government to help build a more resilient, competitive Canada. The opportunities in Manitoba are national in scope, and the Manitoba Advantage is ready to be realized.
