Tucked within the historic Rice Lake Greenstone Belt, 1911 Gold Corporation’s True North Gold Mine stands as a testament to Manitoba’s rich mining legacy—and it’s exciting potential for future development. The operation combines modern infrastructure, deep geological roots, and a growing commitment to local workforce and community partnerships, making it a model for sustainable resource development in northern Manitoba.
On September 16, 2025, representatives from the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund (MMDF) had the opportunity to see this potential up close during a comprehensive site visit to the Bissett-based mine. The tour, hosted by Shaun Heinrichs, President & CEO of 1911 Gold, also included Holly Cote from Prairies Economic Development Canada. The day began with lunch and a safety briefing before moving into a full exploration of the site’s geology, infrastructure, and operations.
During the visit, the MMDF team met key members of the 1911 Gold leadership group, including Ian Cyr (Site Superintendent), Sam Bates (Mine Superintendent), and Cam Kwiatkowski (Environment Superintendent). Located approximately 200 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, the site is easily accessible, just a three-hour drive from the city and within close proximity to an international airport.
The operation is well-established and strategically positioned for future growth. The site runs on 30MW of hydroelectric power, has reliable road access, and accommodates a 200-person camp. Core infrastructure includes a mill (currently processing 1,300 tonnes per year with expansion potential to 2,300 tonnes), a 1,500-metre shaft, three declines, and a suite of facilities for maintenance, laboratories, and administration.
From a business perspective, 1911 Gold’s fully permitted and built-out mill, valued at over $300 million, represents a significant asset. The company’s current resource includes 1.1 million ounces of gold (499,000 oz indicated at 4.41 g/t Au and 644,000 oz inferred at 3.65 g/t Au) and over 2 million ounces of historical production. With ownership of 62,000 hectares in the Rice Lake Greenstone Belt, including three past-producing mines, and with no royalties or debt, the company is well-positioned for sustained advancement.
The Rice Lake Greenstone Belt has a long and storied history of gold discovery, dating back to 1881. Geologically, it is a complex and resource-rich region defined by ancient faulting and diverse mineralization. The True North deposit is classified as an Archean orogenic gold system, with mineralization occurring within gabbro, basalt, volcaniclastic rocks, and quartz/carbonate veins. The current resource model extends 8.4 km east–west and 1.2 km north–south, with mineralization reaching depths of up to 2.1 km and significant potential for further exploration remains.
The MMDF team observed both current and planned tailings facilities and discussed 1911 Gold’s proactive approach to environmental management. The tour also showcased the full milling process, from ore separation through to gold bar production, demonstrating the scale and operational sophistication of the mine. With several senior positions currently open, the company anticipates expanding its workforce in the coming months.
A key focus of the visit was training and workforce development. Discussions centered on opportunities for upskilling both 1911 Gold employees and members of the Hollow Water First Nation community. One particularly promising initiative involves a pilot training partnership with University College of the North (UCN), a model that could serve as a strong foundation for future Indigenous engagement and capacity-building in Manitoba’s mineral sector.
