Last week, Manitoba Chambers of Commerce President & CEO Chuck Davidson led an important conversation with a delegation of Nunavut leaders and Manitoba’s business community. The discussion centered on advancing economic collaboration between Manitoba and the Kivalliq region of Nunavut—two jurisdictions connected not only by geography but also by deep cultural, historical, and economic ties.
A focal point of the conversation was the proposed Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link (KHFL), an Inuit-led initiative spearheaded by Nukik Corporation. This transformative project aims to deliver clean, renewable hydroelectric power and high-speed fibre-optic connectivity from northern Manitoba to communities in Nunavut. Beyond reducing reliance on diesel and improving digital infrastructure, the KHFL is poised to unlock significant economic opportunities by enabling critical mineral development, supporting northern supply chains, and complementing investments in the Port of Churchill.
The roundtable conversation underscored the importance of strategic investments and cross-jurisdictional partnerships in fostering sustainable economic growth in Canada’s North. As dynamic economic and geopolitical forces continue to shape the region, collaborative efforts like the KHFL exemplify the potential for nation-building projects that benefit both Manitoba and Nunavut.
The Manitoba Chambers of Commerce remains committed to facilitating such dialogues and partnerships, recognizing that collaborative initiatives are key to driving economic development and prosperity across northern communities. Thank you to the delagation from Nanavut for making the trip to Manitoba to further this relationship. Thank you also to Nukik Corporation for their continued partnership and persistence on nation building, which will be economically beneficial for both Manitoba and Nunavut.
