Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shuffled his cabinet Friday morning welcoming eight new ministers into Executive Council, as some critics within his caucus call on him to resign. The shuffle follows a tumultuous week in Ottawa and occurs just days after former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation on Monday.
The cabinet shuffle is considered necessary to stabilize the government following the exit of several senior cabinet ministers over the last few months and exactly one month before U.S. president-elect Donald Trump takes office.
In a statement announcing the changes to his ministry, Trudeau said his team “is focused on the things that matter most to you – making life more affordable, growing the economy, and creating good jobs for the middle class.”
Manitoba MP Terry Duguid becomes the Minister of Sport and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada. Duguid was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 federal election in the Manitoba riding of Winnipeg South. Before taking on his new role, Duguid served as Trudeau’s parliamentary secretary. Duguid assumes Dan Vandal’s former job overseeing PrairesCan, after the long serving cabinet minister announced his retirement earlier this year after nearly 30 years in politics.
On behalf of the entire Chamber Network, we warmly welcome Minister Duguid to cabinet and to this important portfolio. The Manitoba Chambers of Commerce is eager to collaborate with the new minister to advance economic development initiatives that drive growth and opportunity for Manitoba. We would also like to offer our sincere thanks to Minister Vandal for his leadership in spearheading several initiatives to bolster economic growth in Manitoba, including boosting green manufacturing, advancing Indigenous economic development, investing in our tech sector, and supporting downtown revitalization.
Adding to an eventful Friday in Ottawa, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh confirmed that his party will bring forward a motion of non-confidence to bring down the Trudeau government in the next sitting of the House of Commons.
