The Linkages Conference, held in Thompson, Manitoba, on February 13-14, 2024, brought together a diverse group of delegates, ranging from mining industry leaders to Indigenous Elders all with a common goal – to shape the destiny of Northern Manitoba. Ed Suzuki, Program Manager, attended on behalf of the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund (MMDF) and the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (MCC).

The conference focused on creative, critical thinking, and collaborative conversations about the potential future of Northern Manitoba. Emphasizing innovation, people, partnership, language, and culture, the event highlighted both challenges and opportunities within the region. Key discussions centered on sustainable practices in the mining sector, community engagement, cross-cultural education, Indigenous culture commitment, and the unique needs of each community.

The conference underscored the imperative to address the labor force challenge in the North, reshaping the image of the industry, and the promotion of local procurement. It stressed the importance of early engagement with First Nations communities, innovative youth training, and community economic development. Linkages addressed the need to build relationships, trust, and local capacity to collectively face challenges and move forward. The overarching theme emphasized understanding and embracing the truth and reconciliation of Indigenous communities, learning from elders, and promoting collaboration among industry, government, and Indigenous communities from the outset.
