CANADIAN CHAMBER ISSUES LETTER TO GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO REQUEST ACTION on protests and blockades

Following protests and blockades, Via Rail has cancelled most of its service across Canada, and CN has shut down its rail network in Eastern Canada, halting freight traffic. In addition to rail blockades, there have been instances of bridge blockades. These disruptions may be having an impact on our members’ ability to successfully operate their businesses, and in some cases may affect your office and/or home heating supply and/or your own family’s food sources.

This morning, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce worked with provincial/territorial chambers (including Manitoba Chambers of Commerce) and other business groups to finalize a multi-signatory letter to the prime minister urging a resolution to the protests that are having a detrimental effect on the Canadian economy. The longer the protests go on, the bigger the impact on the economy and Canadian businesses. We heard loud and clear this morning that the negative impacts on the economy are growing with each day – think propane, food and other supplies.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s President and CEO, Perrin Beatty, issued an update regarding this evolving crisis. You can watch a video update here.
