Manitoba Chambers of Commerce hosts DAY OF ADVOCACY 2019

On November 27, 2019, a highly-engaged group of chamber executives took up residence in Room 54 at the Legislature to host meetings with government representatives, as well as with leaders of the opposition.

“I really enjoy this day,” says Kristi Meek, Executive Director and President, Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, who also attended the MCCs inaugural event in 2018. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to voice our concerns directly to government decision-makers. Whether we’re rural or urban, located south or north or anywhere in between, many of the same issues are affecting our members, and we hear about them regularly.”

Participating chambers executives included Meek from Assiniboia; Carolynn Cancade, Executive Director, Brandon Chamber of Commerce; Jodi Winkler and Marni Harris of Carman Chamber of Commerce; Stephen Chychota of the Dauphin & District Chamber of Commerce; Cindy McDonald, Executive Director, Portage la Prairie Chamber of Commerce; Candace Olafson, Executive Director, Morden Chamber of Commerce, and Paula Yanko and Dana Cyrenne all the way from the Thompson Chamber of Commerce. All members drew attention to the impact of growing crime rates in their communities, and shared concerns about healthcare, taxation, and workforce shortages.

Very special thanks to all participating government representatives who took time out of their very busy schedules to meet with us:

– The Honourable Ralph Eichler, Minister of Economic Development & Training
– Mr. Jim Hrichishen, Deputy Minister of Finance
– Mr. John Leggat, Deputy Minister of Families
– Mr. Phil Houde, CEO, Economic Development Office
– Mr. Dougald Lamont, Leader, Manitoba Liberals
– Mr. Wab Kinew, Leader, Today’s NDP
– Mr. Jamie Moses – MLA for St. Vital
– Mr. Matt Wiebe – MLA for Concordia
