On June 6, 200 business and community leaders joined the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and 19 Deputy Ministers and Assistant Deputy Ministers from the Province of Manitoba for an evening dedicated to sharing ideas and experiences to help boost our province’s competitiveness.
“This dinner is one of our flagship events and is well-attended because of the direct member access to government action drivers and policy shapers,” says Carolynne Jansen, MCC Director of Business Development and Partnerships. “The business community is highly engaged and invested in Manitoba’s success, and our members want to work together to improve life for all residents. We can only do that when we are able to share insights with influencers in government — those who can contribute to policy, foster economic development, and remove barriers to success.”
At The Fairmont Hotel Winnipeg, dinner guests heard an update from Fred Meier, Clerk of the Executive Council and Cabinet Secretary, also known as the head of the provincial civil service. Meier announced the creation of an economic committee of cabinet and secretariat — a rare structure in Canada. Phillip Houde is the committee’s secretary, and has been appointed CEO of the newly-formed Economic Development Office.

According to Meier, the current government has been working hard to transform its approach to work by implementing more lean principles, reducing regulatory and red tape burdens, setting objectives and establishing measurements, and by creating a structure to support economic growth.
