The original community wide event almost doubling last year’s offerings

Selkirk Biz, the new area Chamber of Commerce based in Selkirk MB, brings back the community-wide Black Friday Weekend of shopping extravaganza. Hailed as the first provincial, and quite possibly the first national community event in 2012, they made local and national news showcasing this region as a destination for shoppers. Taking place on November 29 to December 1, over 50 participating merchants will offer shoppers spectacular savings in hopes of keeping them not only north of the US border but north of the perimeter highway as well. This initiative has received full support at the municipal level with a proclamation signed by the Mayors of the RM of St. Andrews, RM of St. Clements, RM of West St. Paul and the City of Selkirk.

After the idea was born over 3 years ago, and with the inaugural event to learn from, the 2nd annual event has strong leadership and committee working hard to ensure another success. Sheri Skalesky, Executive Director with Selkirk Biz, states, “Once we had the leadership & committee in place, we knew we had the right team to put together a solid plan to sell to our members. Last year’s initial response was very positive which reassured us we were on the right track. With the 2012 event exceeding our expectations, we had a great foundation to build on for 2013. The response this year was fantastic from the start. We have reached our goal of 50 participants surpassing 31 from last year.”

The success of the 2012 event was not only talked about in the local area but other communities were taking notes as well. “We were approached by the Steinbach Chamber about how we ran our promotion and were pleased to learn their community will be having an event this year. In our opinion, it was the most ultimate of compliments. What makes one community strong makes others stronger as well.”

The Black Friday Weekend is exclusive to chamber members with all promotional items & marketing provided for them. Participating merchants also contribute a prize towards the Black Friday Prize Package, now worth in excess of $5500.00. With their Black Friday Passports in hand, shoppers can have them validated as they shop. The completed passports can then be entered and lucky shoppers will have the opportunity to win the grand prize package or secondary prizes.

Does this initiative have the power to attract those bargain wise shoppers who would normally head off to the US & Winnipeg hoping to get the outstanding deals? Cyndi Typliski, Black Friday Committee Chair, says, “The key to success with this community event is participation & we’re thrilled to have received such a positive response from our membership. Our hope is to see the same enthusiasm & participation from the shoppers in our communities throughout the weekend”.

With the weekend fast approaching, shoppers are urged to visit the Black Friday Weekend website at for the latest information on participating merchants and prize package passports. They can also get up to the minute news on and @SelkirkBiz on Twitter.
