New Board Members Elected at AGM on May 4, 2013

We welcome the following new members to the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce board:

Brian Scharfstein, Certified Pedorthist (Canada)  |Representing the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce

Brian is a Canadian Pedorthist specializing in care of the diabetic foot.  He is the principal owner of Canadian Footwear and the FootHealth Centre in Winnipeg and Calgary.  He has served as a board member and a volunteer of the Canadian Diabetes Association in Manitoba and is Chair of Winnipeg Chamber.  Brian’s passion for footwear and footcare dates to his childhood as he grew up in the family footwear business.  Brian subsequently pursued his education at Northwestern University in Chicago in the prosthetics and orthotics department to further his training as an orthopedic shoe technician at Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana) and undertook further training with Dennis Janisse at the Milwaukee General Hospital.  Brian has been able to take his skill and create the FootHealth Centre, a centre of excellence for the management of lower extremity problems in persons with all types of orthopedic, rheumatologic, and diabetic complications.  Brian is an active member of the Health Sciences Centre Diabetic Foot and Complicated Wound Clinic where he is an integral part of the healthcare team.  Through this affiliation with the Health Sciences Centre, Brian is actively involved in the management of patients with diabetic foot complications, and in the teaching of trainees in medicine, occupational and physiotherapy, as well as, podiatry and Pedorthics.  Brian is also actively involved in the teaching of nurses on these issues.

Brian’s belief that everyone should have shoes led to the expansion of the SOS Footwear project in 2007 to include the “Fit Feet on the Street” program.  Most of the footwear given away is done so on an individual basis working closely with local charitable organizations like Siloam Mission and the Salvation Army.  Brian has also served on the President’s Expert Committee on Healthcare with Dale Lacombe.


Nate Andrews | Representing The Brandon Chamber of Commerce

Nate graduated from Elton Collegiate and then from Mayville State University with a degree in Exercise Science. He returned to Brandon in 2000 after a stint playing baseball in Australia and became an independent business owner in the city.


After years in the construction and fitness industries he became a partner in the family business and is currently Sales Manager with Guild Insurance Brokers Inc. He has attained the Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation and the Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation. Nate and his wife Kristin, also a partner at Guild Insurance Brokers, live in Brandon with their two children, son, Parker and daughter,Taylor.

Nate is strongly involved in the sporting and business community. He is a member of the UCT, manager/player for the Brandon Marlins Baseball Organization and Facility Manager of Andrews Field. Nate was also Project Manager for the $300,000 of capital improvements that were generated from the Andrews Field Fundraising Campaign in honor of his late father. He sees the importance of community involvement and growth in the community and looks forward to his opportunity with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce.”


Andrew Yorke | President & CEO, Manitoba Blue Cross

Andrew Yorke, President and CEO of Manitoba Blue Cross, leads the development and execution of the company’s strategic planning.

Andrew has spent his entire business career of over twenty years in the insurance and financial industry. Prior to joining Manitoba Blue Cross he has held senior leadership positions at a number of recognized organizations in the industry including Manulife Financial, William M. Mercer Ltd. and Ontario Blue Cross. Andrew is a graduate of the City University Business School (Business Administration) in London, England. He is a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist and a Fellow of the Life Management Institute. Andrew has also served on the Canadian Certified Employee Benefits Specialist Committee as a member of the Canadian Committee, International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Andrew extends his leadership to a number of health and philanthropic organizations in the community. He serves on the Manitoba Medical Service Foundation Board of Directors and the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation Board of Directors. He is the past co-chair of the Technology and Finance Division of the United Way of Winnipeg, and currently the co-chair of the Advancement Division. Andrew also serves on the Business Council of Manitoba and the Foundation Board of Seven Oaks General Hospital.

Johnathan Fahr | Fahr Group

Johnathan is VP of Operations with the Fahr Group; a family owned business since 1954. He has extensive experience in land development, planning, project management and real estate. He has completed the Sustainable Community Development Planning Program at Simon Frasier University and also has comprehensive training in Project Management.  Johnathan has served on many boards and is currently serving on The Board of Directors of The Young Associates – Professional Development Chair and also on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce.  He previously finished his term of Past President of The Project Management Institute Manitoba Chapter (PMI) for 2011-2012. He has also served in other capacities with PMI as Chapter President, Vice President, and The Director of Professional Development. Johnathan also sits on The Project Management Certificate Advisory Board at Red River College.


Kevin Klein|  CEO and VP Sales of Sun Media Manitoba, Winnipeg Sun

Kevin is the CEO and VP Sales of Sun Media based in Winnipeg.  He has had a long and varied career in the media with stints in radio and print from New Brunswick to Alberta.  He has been in Winnipeg for the past 5 years and considers Manitoba home.  He is considered a successful and accomplished senior executive with strengths in motivational leadership, a change agent and a sales and marketing professional with a long history of exceeding sales objectives. He is a builder with strong interpersonal skills, communication and analytical skills with the ability to assess client, corporate, and staff needs and enjoys a good reputation for demonstrating exemplary levels of personal and professional integrity.

His interests range from being active in Tae Kwon Do, coaching minor hockey and softball as well as voluntary commitments in the community such as the United Way, Prairie Action Foundation and Rotary.

 Paul McNeil | Regional Vice President, MMM Group

Paul McNeil is the Regional Vice President of MMM Group Limited.  MMM is a national Canadian consulting engineering and planning firm of 2,000 people located in offices coast to coast.  The firm specializes in transportation planning and engineering, infrastructure, urban planning and building technology.  MMM is one of the leading consulting engineering firms in Canada with P3 projects focused on the delivery of infrastructure.  Paul has been with the firm for 22 years and is responsible for the Manitoba operations of MMM and its staff of 70 people in their Winnipeg office located in the Exchange District.

Paul is a city planner by profession and for the past 37 years has specialized in urban development.  He has a particular interest in complex projects involving the integration of land use planning and transportation planning.  He often leads the projects through the regulatory and municipal approval processes for rezoning and subdivision.  This involves the preparation of various background studies and reports on transportation impacts, infrastructure upgrades, environmental assessment, and supply and demand studies.  Recent higher-profile projects include functioning as project manager for the development of the Seasons of Tuxedo shopping centre (IKEA), Waverley West, CentrePort Canada’s master plan and the Red River Infrastructure Committee (RRIC) review of regional wastewater options in the municipalities along the corridor north of Winnipeg.

Paul grew up in Regina, moved to Winnipeg to attend university, and has lived in Winnipeg for the past forty years.  He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, holding a Master’s Degree in City Planning.  His current passion is learning how to sail.
