Manitoba Chambers of Commerce Joins Literacy Partners to Honour Tina Bergen of Grunthal on October 2
Literacy skills essential building blocks
These foundation skills are embedded in activities in the home, school, community and workplace,” said Graham Starmer, President of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, one of the strategic partners together with Literacy Partners of Manitoba and co-sponsor of the upcoming Breakfast of Champions on October 2, 2012.
In order to bring recognition to achievements in literacy in every province and territory, the Premiers created a Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion in 2004. The award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy.
The Council of the Federation Literacy Award covers the entire spectrum of the field, including family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy and is given to recognize the excellence of educators, volunteers, learners, organizations and businesses. Manitoba’s winner, Tina Bergen of Grunthal will be honoured by Premier Selinger at this event.
Tina had a passion for learning as a child in Paraguay where her schooling stopped at age 12. She moved with her young family to Canada, where “a whole new world opened up and it was like her mind had come to life.”
When Tina was laid off from the local manufacturing plant there was the opportunity to pursue a job in the Residential Care field. This work required a grade 12 diploma so she enrolled at South Eastman English and Literacy Services to improve her writing skills. Within six months she finished her Stage 3, wrote a book, Turbulence, Transitions and Triumphs and enrolled in high school courses.
Tina inspires other learners through her writing, volunteering on the board and her successful transition to the adult learning centre.
Come out and join Premier Greg Selinger and your friends from Literacy Partners Manitoba and the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce to celebrate this accomplishment with Tina and her family and her community.
