The Manitoba CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE is a Powerful ADVOCATE for BUSINESS in our Province

By Graham Starmer, President and CEO, Manitoba Chambers of Commerce

Happy Labour Day…and welcome to the fall season.  It is almost like a new year as we usher in a busy season ahead of us.

Established in 1931, the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce is the umbrella organization for Manitoba’s chamber movement. Our mission is clear and that is to foster a dynamic economy and vibrant communities, making Manitoba the best place in which to live, work, invest and raise a family.

For over 80 years, our advice, assistance and lobbying efforts have been successfully defined, developed and delivered by some 67 dedicated, local community chambers and businesses throughout Manitoba.

Today, we are 10,000 strong. Ours is a powerful network respected as an influential voice for business in Manitoba. Because of this, we are also considered a major driver for a healthy, prosperous provincial economy. Year after year, Chambers members—new, recent and long-standing—work together to advance policy and regulation, forge key partnerships and publicize important issues of the day.

Together, our ever-growing membership strives to affect lasting, positive change. Through our hard work, innovation, dedication and research, our organization leads the way for Manitoba business as it remains in regular dialogue with government decision-makers at the local, provincial and federal levels.

GOOD for BUSINESS and GOOD for MANITOBANS

Backed by the latest research and an engaged business community, the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce provides expert advice and input to local, provincial and federal governments on a regular, ongoing basis. Often, our efforts result in significant changes in public policy.

Our advocacy is rooted in and reinforced by our many distinguished members side-by-side with 67 local Chambers of Commerce throughout Manitoba. This is a direct result of their active and enthusiastic participation in our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the resolution process that precedes it, our many Task Forces and their year-round feedback.

POLICY POSITIONS that help SHARPEN Manitoba’s COMPETITIVE EDGE

Chambers Policy Positions reinforce Manitoba’s time-honoured position as an attractive investment destination—where businesses across our province thrive and attract a wide array of skilled workers of all descriptions. Through our Chambers’ resolution process, our Policy Committee, in turn, creates and finalizes these positions for presentation at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) every year in April.

During our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, Members

DISCUSS and DEFINE the Policy RESOLUTIONS that GUIDE our EFFORTS

Chamber members are invited to attend, advise and participate in the determination of these policy resolutions. Once an issue has been identified through monthly Chambers committee meetings or at the request of local chambers in Manitoba; a Chambers Task Force is organized. These consist of members whose expertise and experience contribute to a carefully-crafted advocacy plan designed to benefit Chambers members and, ultimately, the business community at large.

Vital issues for this coming year include Strategic Directions that deal with:

  • The Lake Winnipeg Watershed
  • A Citizen’s  View of Healthcare
  • Northern Economic Development Strategy
  • A Bold Strategy for Manitoba

Businesses affiliated with the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce have gained the trust and respect of millions of Manitobans for their high standards and reputable business practices. They focus on the betterment of Manitoba business because they sincerely care about their customers, their reputation and their standing in both their local community and across the province. We are grateful to have them on our team.
