JOANNE GOBEIL: Winner of the first edition of La Fosse aux Lions

 

Congratulations to Joanne Gobeil of Fried Green Tomatoes, grand winner of CDEM’S first ever Fosse aux lions. She wins $15, 000, a year’s worth of free advertisement in La Liberté, Manitoba’s weekly French newspaper, and a membership to la Chambre de commerce francophone de Saint-Boniface. The winner will also be mentored by CDEM business advisors.

La Fosse aux lions is loosely based on CBC’s Dragon’s Den. The event was held November 16, 2011, at Université Saint-Boniface. 4 finalists were chosen to compete. Each had 20 minutes to make a case for their business concept before a panel of seasoned business people.

 

The contest was organized by the CDEM, the Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities, to encourage young entrepreneurs and help them become the business leaders of tomorrow through mentorship and financing. Their business ideas were evaluated according to a list of criteria such as commercialization potential and innovation.

The winner, Fried Green Tomatoes, is a specialized catering service with a focus on homemade and healthy food. It also has a strong teaching component. With her winnings, Joanne Gobeil plans to expand her teaching area and buy additional kitchen equipment.

Jocelyne Baribeau – Productions Madame Diva, offers shows for young audiences in both English and French.

Miguel Vielfaure – Étchiboy, a Métis company that produces high quality aboriginal products.

Rossel Beaudette and Stefan Maynard – Cyre Clothing Company – manufactures high quality, technical snowmobile riding gear.
