“We look forward to building on the co-operative and productive relationship we already enjoy with Premier Selinger and his government,” said president Barnard. “A strong post-secondary education system and a robust innovation agenda are critical to our province’s future and we will be working to advance these important issues over the next four years.”

Premier Selinger, who first became premier in 2009 after 10 years as minister of finance, is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Social Work degree. He also taught in the Faculty of Social Work.

The U of M president also praised Progressive Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen and Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard for their hard work during the campaign.

“Individuals who are willing to make personal and family sacrifices to make our province a better place to live are worthy of our respect,” said Barnard. “Anyone who participates in the political process is contributing to a healthy democracy in our province and in our country. I acknowledge and congratulate you on your efforts.”
