Manitoba Bold Recommends Taking Manitoba Companies to the World to Grow

Sep 30, 2011 | Chamber News

The Manitoba BOLD campaign is calling on the provincial party leaders to take steps that will increase the number of Manitoba companies involved in international trade in an effort to create jobs and drive investment in this province.

Dave Angus

“The economic downturn over the past couple of years has clearly shown the business community that they must look at opportunities from a global perspective if they want to grow their businesses,” said Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dave Angus. “In order to achieve that success there is a role for the next provincial government to play in assisting businesses in opening doors in other countries.”

In an effort to achieve this The Manitoba BOLD platform recommends:

  • That the Province of Manitoba implements a new Trade Strategy for Manitoba that increases the number of companies involved in international trade and enhances the awareness of Manitoba in international markets.
  • That the Province of Manitoba enhances the leadership of trade development through the formation of public/private partnerships that can leverage the current trade expertise in Manitoba.
  • That the Province of Manitoba implements the Yes! Winnipeg model in all regions of the province to promote, support and expedite successful business development. The initiative assists in the creation and retention of jobs and business investment.
  • That the Province of Manitoba improves and joins the New West Partnership to ensure Manitoba is a part of the Competitive West.

According to statistics from the Manitoba government’s Department of Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade, Manitoba businesses currently export more than $10.5 billion worth of goods annually and more than 70 per cent of that trade is done with the United States.

“During this provincial election The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce believes it’s time to be BOLD and focus on growing our economy, creating jobs and leveraging our strengths through a strategic, focused and results driven approach,” concluded Angus. “Providing business with the ability to explore opportunities that exist in global market will help to achieve this.”
