The Farm to School Manitoba Healthy Choice Fundraiser (FSMHCF), which was piloted in 2010 at 66 schools, is now available to grades K-12 in all schools across Manitoba from September to December 2011.

The FSMHCF, which is sponsored by the Manitoba Association of Home Economists (MAHE) and Peak of the Market, gives schools the opportunity to fundraise by selling bundles of locally grown potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips and cabbage in $10 or $20 bundles, with schools retaining 50 per cent of all monies raised.

“FSMHCF provides a healthy, affordable alternative for families, and we are excited to now offer this opportunity across the province”, says Getty Stewart, Professional Home Economist and President of MAHE. “It also provides schools with an excellent fundraising option, and supports Manitoba farmers and buying local.”

The FSMHCF’s goal is to have 200 schools registered for the fundraiser for the 2011 season. Schools can enrol online at www.farmtoschoolmanitoba.ca/enroll

Larry McIntosh, President and CEO of Peak of the Market

Larry McIntosh, President & CEO, Peak of the Market stated, “Peak’s 40 Manitoba Family Farms are committed to supplying locally grown veggies for this great fundraiser. We will deliver the vegetable order for free regardless of where the school is located in Manitoba even if we have to fly it in.”

Howard Ryant, principal of Collicutt School, is an enthusiastic returning participant of the fundraiser:

“This program is a win-win-win. Children learn about nutrition, families are able to economically access fresh local vegetables, and schools and families can work together on promoting healthy living.”

Sept. 13, 2011 is the official Launch of the FSMHCF to all schools in Manitoba. All schools are invited to celebrate “Veggie Time” on Sept. 13 by visiting http://www.farmtoschoolmanitoba.ca/  for a variety of fun veggie-themed activities that they can do with students.
