The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) is holding its 43rd Annual General Assembly (AGA) in the City of Brandon at the Keystone Centre on September 10th and 11th. Delegates from across the province will come together to discuss issues relating to Metis governance and to celebrate Metis culture and heritage in the very special “Year of the Metis Veteran”.

MMF President David Chartrand and the Board of Directors welcomes nearly 3,000 delegates to Brandon for the two day event, which is the biggest General Assembly of any Aboriginal group in the country.

Among the many scheduled events there will also be the MEDO Business Summit, a Youth Conference and a performance of the Grand Ole Opry.

The MEDO Business Summit offers Metis entrepreneurs an opportunity to network with larger corporations with whom they normally would not have the chance to discuss investments and strategies. The summit offers a neutral ground for business discussions highlighting workforce development and training for both large and small companies.

Metis Youth are also an important part of the AGA, and this year the Youth Conference hosted by the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS) will help engage Metis Youth in their culture and heritage through the knowledge and stories shared with them by our Elders. The Youth Conference goes hand-in-hand with this year’s theme; “The Year of the Metis Veteran”, which will focus on the historic importance of Metis Veterans and their brave service.

Metis entertainment is always on tap during the AGA and this year is no different with a performance of the Grand Ole Opry hosted by the MMF Southeast Region on September 10th. All proceeds for the event are going to the MMF Bereavement Fund.

In this the “Year of the Metis Veteran” the MMF will make a very special presentation to its Metis Veterans with a commemorative plaque in honour of the sacrifices they made in defence against tyranny and oppression for the benefit of all humanity. Their important role in Canadian and Metis history will always be remembered and honoured as a brave legacy for future generations to come.

Also for the first time, the Manitoba Metis Federation Annual General Assembly will be streaming live online. Just visit the MMF website and follow the AGA link on the homepage.
