Canada Safeway has launched its month-long Prostate Cancer Campaign, a fundraising and awareness campaign, continuing a tradition of raising millions of dollars to find a cure for the most common cancer in Canadian men.
Marv Foy, a prostate cancer survivor says, “When I look around my golf club and realize that one in seven men in the clubhouse will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime, it makes me appreciate how fortunate I am that my prostate cancer was detected in its earliest stage. The support I received from my family, doctor and my local prostate cancer support group really made a difference in my recovery”.
With over 70 affiliated support groups, the Prostate Cancer Canada Network is a much appreciated resource for newly diagnosed men and their families.
Safeway, one of the largest corporate supporters of cancer research and outreach, dedicates the entire month of June to raising funds at its 215 Western Canadian Stores as well as its 1479 stores in the United States. More than $65.4 million has been raised across Northern America in the past decade which has made a tremendous impact on Prostate Cancer research and support programs for men and their families. Last year $1.4 million was raised in Western Canada through a variety of in store fundraising events, the Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run as well through donations received from customers.
“Safeway is committed to funding research that will lead to a cure for Prostate Cancer,” said Chuck Mulvenna, President and Chief Operating Officer for Canada Safeway. “Our unique ability to reach millions of shoppers each week not only allows us the opportunity to raise money for research, but to also share the message about the importance of early detection and treatment.”
During the campaign, Canada Safeway customers are invited to make a donation at the check stand when shopping at their local Safeway. When a donation of $2.00 is made, customers receive a coupon for 10% off their next purchase of Safeway brand products throughout the store. 100% of the funds raised during the campaign will help Prostate Cancer Canada support critical research taking place at the Vancouver Prostate Cancer Centre and throughout western Canada.
“Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC) is very grateful to have the support of a highly regarded organization such as Canada Safeway Limited. Safeway office employees, store managers and their employees have shown a true commitment to bringing much needed awareness and fundraising to the prostate cancer cause. Their involvement in the June in-store campaign and the Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run illustrates their passion and professionalism and inspires everyone, from the members of our prostate cancer support groups to the PCC staff across the country”, said Steve Jones, President & CEO of Prostate Cancer Canada.
This Father’s Day, This Run’s For You.
The Safeway Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer is scheduled to take place in 13 communities across Canada on June 19, 2011. Last year these community based events raised in excess of $1 Million and welcomed 8,000 participants. For more information regarding the Fathers Day events, please visit fathersdayrun.ca
