Tory demonstrates the power of innovation and active sponsorship in advancing women and diverse groups

Catalyst Canada announced today that it will honour Jennifer Tory, RBC’s Regional President of Greater Toronto, for her ongoing contributions to advancing women in business. Ms. Tory has been instrumental in the advancement of women and other diverse groups at RBC — where diversity is a long-standing core value. The annual Catalyst Canada Honours recognize exceptional individuals who have demonstrated commitment, passion and results through their championship of women’s advancement in Canadian business.

“We believe that empowering women is both a business imperative and the right thing to do. Jennifer is a true thought leader who understands that to serve the market, you need to hire the market,” said Gordon M. Nixon, President and CEO, RBC. “Jennifer has the ability to spot potential early and has personally mentored and sponsored many women and visible minority leaders at RBC. She has been a forerunner and champion of active sponsorship and has helped our business develop the full potential of our diverse talent.”

A member of RBC’s Diversity Leadership Council, chaired by Mr. Nixon, Ms. Tory’s innovative approaches have been successful in advancing high-potential women and visible minorities as part of her overall strategy of cultivating talent for results. She has restructured regional market leadership roles to create additional development opportunities and built a robust pipeline of representative leaders by making it a personal goal to select five junior diverse employees to proactively develop and mentor each year. A champion and sponsor of diversity throughout her 30-plus year career, Ms. Tory has also introduced several strategic learning opportunities by supporting participation on external boards, committees and special programs for women and minorities, and by exposing talent to varied work experiences.

Ms. Tory’s commitment to advancing women and diversity extends beyond her role at the bank into the community, with her work on the Boards of the Toronto International Film Festival and the Toronto Board of Trade, and as the Chair of the Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation’s Capital Campaign.

Ms. Tory will be honoured for her commitment to advancing women and diversity at The Catalyst Canada Honours dinner on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
