Professional services firm PwC has announced a corporate sponsorship program supporting nine Canadian athletes. Ryder Hesjedal, world-renowned Canadian cyclist and Olympic gold medallist speed skaters Charles and François Hamelin, turned out at the firm’s Toronto headquarters today to launch the program.
The sponsorships will last between three and four years, and the athletes—who have been selected by partners and staff though an on-line vote—all compete internationally in their respective disciplines. Other selected athletes include wrestler Carol Huynh and para-alpine skier Matt Hallatt.
“Sponsoring athletes is an important part of our firm’s legacy. By sponsoring a variety of different athletes, from different sports across Canada, we are able to reflect the diversity of our firm and our country,” said Gino Scapillati, a PwC national manager partner. “The athletes that have been chosen exemplify the values that are important to us, such as excellence, teamwork and leadership.”
Born in Victoria, BC, Ryder Hesjedal was a big attraction to PwC staff, taking part in an indoor stationary bicycle speed contest in the afternoon, and signing autographs. The 31-year old Tour de France veteran was selected as Canadian cyclist of the decade in 2009. Hesjedal will be looking to improve on last year’s 7th place finish on the Tour de France. This year’s tour begins July 2, 2011.
Four additional athletes will be selected by PwC during the summer.
