The challenge of developing and maintaining an effective Board confronts a surprisingly broad range of people and organizations – almost every local chamber, many not-for-profits, a number of businesses, and a growing number of people who volunteer.
In this session, Jeff Martin of Deloitte, talked about “Working with Boards”, while Barbara Bowes of Legacy Bowes Group tackled the tough topic, “Building Consensus”.
Below are brief bios of Jeff and Barbara, followed by PowerPoint’s and videos of their presentations.
Jeff R. Martin, CA: Jeff Martin is an Associate Partner in the Assurance and Advisory group in the Winnipeg office of Deloitte.
Jeff graduated on the Dean’s Honours List from the University of Manitoba with his Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) degree in 1988. He became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba in 1989.
Jeff provides accounting and auditing services, along with tax and general business advice to a wide variety of medium and large sized businesses in Manitoba. He is an office leader in our technical and quality assurance group and has extensive experience with owner-managed companies, not-for-profit organizations, Crown corporations and manufacturers.
Examples of Jeff’s business experience include audit of several Crown corporations including Manitoba Housing & Renewal Corporation and the Canadian Wheat Board, which includes meetings and advice to the Boards of Directors and Finance Committees, and cooperative reporting to the Offices of the Auditor General in Manitoba and Ottawa respectively. He also has coordinated strategic planning sessions and provided best practice advice on governance and controls to several boards in the public and private sector.
Jeff also taught the Municipal Accounting course at the University of Manitoba, as part of the Manitoba Municipal Administration certificate within the Department of Continuing Education.
Jeff serves on the Board and Finance Committee of Southwood Golf & Country Club and Grant Memorial Baptist Church. He is active in the community, coaching hockey and football in Fort Garry, and is the Winnipeg Office coordinator for Deloitte’s annual Impact Day – a day when all staff volunteer their services to community organizations.
Barbara J. Bowes, FCHRP, CMC. M. Ed.: Barbara is President of Legacy Bowes Group and is a leading and most respected authority on human Resources. She is a Certified Human Resource Management Professional (CHRP– Fellow), a Certified Management Consultant, (CMC), and holds a Master of Administration in Education. Barbara is also certified in a number of human resource and proprietary operational strategies. Finally, Barbara recently completed all the coursework for a PH.D in business and leadership.
Barbara’s is a weekly columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press. Her “Working World” column in the career section of the Winnipeg Free Press is one of the most widely read sections of the newspaper. In addition, Barbara is a weekly contributor to the Manitoba Chamber Business show and has her own weekly radio show called, “BowesKnows”. Finally, Barbara is the author of a new book called “Resume Rescue”, the highly popular, Easy Resume Book: A Transferable Skills Approach, two Working World with Barbara Bowes books and a new book called “Taming the Workplace Tigers: Powering Your Career to a Roaring Success.
Finally, Barbara is a popular guest speaker and workshop leader and has earned the professional level in the Canadian National Speakers Association (CAPS). She is known as a motivational speaker who can engage a variety of audiences. She speaks on human resource and career management topics.
