The Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA) joins the Canola Council of Canada (CCC) and other canola grower organizations across Canada in congratulating the federal government for their recent biofuel announcement. The announcement made by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz along with Environment Minister Peter Kent set a start date of July 1, 2011 for the implementation of a two percent inclusion for biofuel in all diesel fuel sold in Canada.
“The announcement is exciting news for canola farmers in Manitoba and across Canada,” said MCGA Executive Director Bill Ross. “It opens up new markets for canola, new economic opportunities for Canada, and an environmentally friendly solution for consumers.”
The recently-released Lifecycle Analysis Canola Biodiesel commissioned by the CCC showed that Canadian canola as a feedstock in biodiesel reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) by 90 percent compared to fossil diesel.
In another study, the Alberta Renewable Diesel Demonstration proved that canola biodiesel performed well in practical, on-road tests in cold weather.
