After the call for nominations in March, the 2009 recipient for Citizen of the Year was bestowed to Mrs. Olive Lillie of the RM of St. Andrew’s.

Olive’s long-standing devotion and continued community involvement is the epitome of volunteerism which made her stand out and shine amongst the many nominations received.  She has supported many organizations over the years including the Selkirk Legion, St. Peter’s Church, Selkirk Friendship Centre, Selkirk & District General Hospital Gift Shop, Manitoba Metis Federation and the Selkirk Soup Kitchen.

The 25h Annual Citizen of the Year Wine & Cheese Reception was held in her honour on April 22, 2010 at Rembrandt’s Bistro and Conference Centre in Lockport.

The 125-plus in attendance included 27 members of Olive’s immediate family, friends, and fellow volunteers; representation from the Selkirk and District Chamber of Commerce, City of Selkirk, RM of St. Andrews and RM of St Clements; and MLA Greg Dewar.

The evening was led by Master of Ceremonies and Chamber Past President Kelly Lewis. There were several speeches and presentations made to Olive during the formal part of the evening, including comments from Greg Dewar (MLA – Selkirk), Reeve Don Forfar (RM of St. Andrews), Mayor Steve Strang (RM of St. Clements), Mayor David Bell (City of Selkirk), Peguis Chief Glen Hudson, West St. Paul – Councilor Sharon Yackel, nominator and past recipient Loraine Still, Committee Chair Yvonne Poirier and President Kelly Cook (Selkirk and District Chamber of Commerce).

Finally, and with much anticipation, the guest of honour had the final words.

A great evening fit for a great lady!

Many thanks to all who contributed to make this evening a success!
