The Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council Inc. (MRAC) is a private not-for-profit corporation that distributes Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) funding for innovative and sustainable agricultural projects to advance the agriculture and agri-food industry in Manitoba.
Since its incorporation in 1997, MRAC has supported more than 600 projects and distributed just under $24 million towards adaptation and innovation. By working with industry partners, MRAC has leveraged an investment of more than $75 million in agricultural advancement in Manitoba.
In June 2009 MRAC was chosen to deliver Manitoba’s portion ($9.5 million) of the five-year $163 million Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP).
CAAP’s objective is to help the agricultural sector adapt and remain competitive. Projects funded under CAAP will be proposal-based and originate from industry. The program encourages the agricultural industry to work in partnership across the value chain – farmers, processors, distributors and retailers – to develop and use innovative solutions and to explore new and emerging market opportunities. Eligible ag-related projects could be in the areas of traceability, environment, climate change, capacity development, pests and diseases and more.
Eligible applicants include individuals, organizations, associations, cooperatives, marketing boards, corporations, aboriginal groups, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies. Federal and provincial government departments or agencies; and universities and colleges are not eligible to apply as project leaders.
MRAC also supports the creation and development of value chains in Manitoba through the Value Chain Manitoba Initiative (VCMI). Working collaboratively with other councils in the Prairie Provinces, MRAC encourages development of value chains by increasing awareness, facilitating collaboration, offering training workshops and providing funding. VCMI is a collaboration initiated by the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council (MRAC), with funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in partnership with Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI).
