The Composites Innovation Centre (CIC) is a not-for-profit organization whose main goal is to support the economic growth of composite component manufacturers. It is governed by an industry led board of directors consisting of many of the key industries in Manitoba including Boeing Winnipeg, Magellan Aerospace, Motor Coach Industries, Structural Composites Technologies, Schweitzer Mauduit Canada and Acsion Industries.
The majority of activities performed by the organization are to take research and development knowledge produced by universities and other research organizations and transfer the resulting materials and manufacturing technologies to industry. In limited cases, in-house research and development is performed where there are gaps in this knowledge and organizations able to perform these development activities are difficult to locate and/or engage.
The CIC has a unique funding approach in that it utilizes both industry and government funding to cover in-house and external costs on a project by project basis. The CIC does support university research in providing funding to support primarily salaries, materials and consultant/subcontractor costs. All projects, including university research activities, are vetted through a project selection process that is overseen by the Board of Directors ensuring industry is targeting the CIC’s financial resources to areas that are of most interest to them.
