New Winnipeg Terminal: An Intermodal Airport City
Who Was James Armstrong Richardson?
Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport
Canada’s major airports were originally built and managed by the Federal Government. In the early 1990s, Ottawa introduced the National Airports Policy (NAP) and began to transfer major airports to local authorities. In 1997 Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport was transferred to Winnipeg Airports Authority under a 60 year lease. Winnipeg Airports Authority is a non share capital corporation responsible for the financial and operational management of the airport.
Winnipeg Airports Authority’s vision of leading transportation innovation and growth is not limited to air travel. It is one that sees Winnipeg recognized worldwide as a center of transportation excellence. The growth model has focused components: Airport Site Redevelopment, Airport Campus and Inland Port.
Construction of a new air terminal building and associated infrastructure is underway and will continue through 2010. Recent campus announcements include Canada Post building a new state-of-the-art plant, Greyhound Canada’s new bus facility combining passenger service for travelers and a vital inter-modal link for cargo, Standard Aero’s 80,000 square foot expansion and announcement of a new Luxury Hotel contribute to our region’s global reputation as a center of transportation excellence.
The Governments of Canada and Manitoba recently committed $212 million in infrastructure funding for CentrePort Canada. CentrePort Canada is a private sector-led corporation created by provincial legislation with a mandate to develop and promote the inland port.
The first International Airport in Canada, Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is centrally located at the heart of the continent, in close proximity to major rail and trucking routes and home to some of the biggest aerospace companies in the world.
Winnipeg Airports Authority is proud stewards of our community’s airport and intent on a vision in leading transportation infrastructure to new levels of excellence. This is a combined effort of a strong board and team provided with insight and guidance from several community committees. It will see Winnipeg recognized worldwide as an “airport city”, creating a major inter-modal transport facility centered on the airport campus.
